Corrosion Testing

Corrosion is the natural deterioration of a metallic substance (pure metal or alloy) under the effect of environmental conditions, which are governed by temperature, chemical composition of pollutants/corrodants, humidity, and other factors. The environment to which a test material is exposed determines its corrosion behavior. Since Corrosion affects almost every conceivable substance, be it in our daily lives or in industrial applications, it is extremely important to conduct ‘Corrosion Testing‿and utilize the test results for the purpose of product improvement and minimizing huge economic losses. Hence, such testing activities can be used for ‘Failure Analysis‿of a variety of commercial engineering materials.

Based on the appearance of corroded metal/material, Corrosion can be classified into a number of different types. The morphology of the attack is the basis of such a classification, and some of the types are Uniform/General Corrosion, Pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, Galvanic corrosion, Inter-granular corrosion etc.
